I have a 1985 auto mini city E 1000 and every gear works fine apart from 1st, I think the clutch is slipping because it sounds like it engages but the car doesn't move. I changed the oil recently but that hasn't made a difference. Any ideas? Cheers

What oil did you use? Modern car oils are super slippery. You need MA2 motorcycle oil.

We are new to mini autos too, our mini (1000cc Mayfair) was OK when warm (test drive at the garage!) but had horrible changes when cold (first morning we owned it). 2 days later changed out the 'new' oil the garage had put in for Castrol Power1 4T 10W40, MA2 spec bike oil and that transformed it...... hope its just the wrong oil and nothing more serious.

Yes, it can be amazing the difference having the correct oil in an auto mini, especially in an engine with a lot of miles under its belt. Well done in catching it early and hopefull your sorted for a while. Terry.

Many people around the world fail to see the problems with thick oils and slippery oils in these transmissions. When cold, a 20W-50 really cannot displace itself from the discs, and without the friction modifier in the MA2, it fights the discs. Too bad the average driver or even "mechanic" can't take a good look at the discs.
Hopefully that is all it was.

I have experienced the slipping just recently for the first time since owning the Auto Mini. It happened after I have changed engine oil to Penrite for classic mini 20W-50. Especially an uphill section, the car would remain in first gear forever. The problem seems to go away when the engine warmed up a little.
I have check the engine oil level and it is ok. Could this be just the oil was too thick when engine is cold or I may have some other more serious issue with the car? Thank you

20w50 is probably too thick for your trans. I had a lot of problems until I found out I supposed to run 10w40. Shifts great now all the time with 10w40. Mine takes while to go into any forward gear from neutral. Always stays in and shifts right once its in.

Check your low pressure valve, remove strip clean etc... check for free operation as they can wear and stay very slightly open.

Both too thick and not made for automatic transmissions. That product has extra additives to protect sliding tappets and cams against high pressure springs in some classic engines. The opposite of what you need in automatic clutches.

Will the low pressure valve make the car very slow on first takeoff. I have no power until maybe 2000 rpm's then it runs great. I can do the stall test and get about 1400 rpm's with a SPI converter on a 998.

Because they like most people don't even consider the automatic !
The question to ask is "if I use your oil who do I need to speak to about reimbursing the cost of my destroyed automatic Mini transmission"
I suspect you will find the small print removes all danger of them getting sued for loss due to incorrect oil !
I ask them for the test report concluded on a classic mini with an AP automatic unit..... the phone often goes dead at this point.
I'll stick to MA2.

I spend a lot of time trying to refute false claims and myths by people who are ignorant of the variations or even concepts of oils. Surprisingly, I even got Shell to thank me for some comments.

The low pressure valve has nothing to do with you pulling off from rest accept that it maintains engine oil pressure at tick over.. and keeps the converter filled with oil. The SPi converter is a low stall converter to pull it you need more torque, ie a 1098 with engine modification/s or any of the 1275 50BHP + engines would be ideal. 998 and 848 need a higher stall speed converter.

No, it had to do with very confusing language on their own products where they literally described some of their inferior products better than better products.
I often find absurd claims on products, and in this case it was within their own products.

I swapped out the low pressure valve this evening. Was a little more involved than I thought. I used the one of my SPI trans. Took it apart and cleaned it. It is nice and smooth even before cleaning. Had 2 springs. The original valve had one spring and definitely not smooth. Felt very gritty. I'm still going to take it apart and clean it up. I changed the oil as well since quite a bit came out when I took the valve off. I put in Lucas 10w40 semi-synthetic motorcycle oil that is MA2.
I'm running the SPI converter as I had one and thought the original was going bad. They both stall about the same. My car has been very slow off the line since I got it about a year ago. It also runs on the hot side. If I'm not careful it will get up to 220F. I'm running an aluminum radiator and a tropical 6 blade fan. It also has new water pump and hoses and heater core.

Also forgot to mention the SPI valve has 2 pressure test ports. Although I see no way to get to them with the engine in the car. Maybe the SPI had a different subframe?

1) you may have gear "tie up" this is when 2 or more gears try to engage at the same time, usually the whole driving experience is slugguish and the car feels like the brakes are on.
2) the 2 pressure ports you mention are simply drillings that allow for manufacture, metro's also have a thermostatic valve in one hole.

It does it every time I put it in a forward gear. Sometimes I have to increase the rpms when it's warm. I have not adjusted the bands. Looked online to find how to do it with no luck.

Forgot to add. It's an 81 998 a+. Looks to be original. Has about 70,000 miles.

There is absolutely no reason that an AP unit (well AP 2 onwards) can't go on forever.... the main failures are due to poor oil quality and change points causing as Terry says the rubber parts to fail. Of course there will always be failures in service, but poor service is the main culprit.

I've only had my car a little over a year. The last guy only put a few hundred miles on it.
My car does roll easy when I first put it in gear. I must have had a tire in a hole when I thought it was binding up. I was thinking the forward clutch was taking a while to engage but my rpms drop as soon as I select a forward gear.
