Hi Nigel, welcome to the forum. Have a read through the various subject,s on here as they may steer you to a course of action as your condition may have been covered. Is it a high pitch squeal or is it more a metallic noise. First off, i would say change the engine oil, and make sure its 10w40 and not 20w50. Make sure its Ma2 as used in motorcycles. I use Motul but there,s other brands that are suitable. Although your car has relatively low miles ,its service record and frequency of oil changes is more important.

Definitely make sure you use 10w40. Mine would squeal when I had 20w50 in it. I run Lucas 10w40 ma2 in mine now. Shifts great now.

At the moment it only squeals so I will change the oil to what you recommend . It's going to be a while before I put back on the road she needs a tidy up my nan had the car from new and has only just given up driving at 97 don't think it was properly serviced for quite a long time thanks for your advice

Sounds good, a project with sentimental value. Unfortunately the Ap gearbox as fitted to your car suffers if it doesent get regular service (at least oil and filter change), every 6 months or 1500 miles ,which ever comes first. I,m sure your Nan,s local garage probably serviced once a year on mot day, lol. Any pics of the machine.

Hello Nigel,
I have this setup on mine.
What do you need to know?
On my car the two connectors to the thermostat housing are side by side.
The left hand connector has a 'T' shaped connector on it
One tube comes from the distributor and connects to the left hand bit of the 'T' the right hand bit of the 'T' is connected to the charcoal canister under the nearside wing.
The right hand connector has a tube which appears to connect into the carburettor.
Is that any help?
Do you have any of the tubes?
Is the charcoal canister still present under the wing?
I could supply some images if required.

Images as promised, sorry one is a bit out of focus. The first image shows the connections to the thermostat housing The top single connection goes to the carburettor On the bottom 'T' connector the left connection goes to the distributor and the right connector goes off to the charcoal canister under the nearside wing. The next image shows the connection to the distributor The next 2 images show the connection to the carburettor (air filter box removed) Hope these help Nigel
