Try and get motorcycle oil. It may cost a little more now, but will save you more in the long run. Look for MA2 on the bottle. I ran mineral oil, then semi synthetic, and now motorcycle oil. The oil is so much cleaner now and shifts much better with the MA2 oil.

Hi 69hcode, thank you for that, I'm going to run the car for a couple of weeks on the semi synthetic, then change oil and filter, then put the motorcycle oil in, I just didnt know if the gearbox was ok with semi synthetic, and not plain mineral.

you can use mineral, semi-synthetic, or synthetic. But don't use an SN car oil. It is intentionally too slippery for a Mini Transmission. The MA2 includes additives that change the friction coefficient.

Hello everybody, apologies for the delay in an update, the engine/gearbox is in, been for a run down the road and it runs like a dream!! Every shift up and down, really smooth, kick down perfect, so hopefully sorted. A big thanks to everyone who's helped out with this problem, much appreciated. Thinking of selling the car now if anybody's interested, any test welcome, it was up for sale before this but I wouldn't sell it with the gearbox problem, it will be on the for sale section on here soon.

Hi Clarko, well done mate, it just goes to show not every gearbox issue is a 1200 pound gearbox rebuild if you can improvise and not scared to get dirt under your fingernails. How did you get round the drive shaft issue in the end?. Its running /driving sweet, now the time then to offload, good luck with your sale, and all the best from me and the forum. Terry.
P.s in 5 years time you,ll be saying i wish i had,nt sold my mini,lol.

Hi Terry, thank you for that, I turned the driveshaft pot joints down to 32.25mm and then case hardened them, so hopefully they won't wear. I was selling the car previous to the gearbox issue, I'm wanting a normal round nose saloon, so it's to be sold to buy another, I won't be without a mini!!!!

Hi terry, not too fussed really, I enjoy restoring/repairing things and there's not a lot I can't do, if I see something that's MOT'd but needs a couple of bits that would be perfect for me!

So, what was the end problem with the gearbox?

I'm not sure about the final problem that the original gearbox had, I need to strip it and have a look, probably just let it go with the car for spares if I'm honest!
