Hello to all I'm a newbie here and its great to have found this board. lately I pretty much had been just reading and trying to get acquainted with my new ( to me) mini automatic of course, let me mention that is a Kensington edition (Japanese market) SPI just got it and has a broken transmission so I'm trying to get the whole unit out I'm waiting on my shop manual but got anxious and started the job with another manual that has nothing on autos but the basic info at least to get it done, now finally my question, I got so far to actually pulling the unit from the body but I was not able to because the front transmission cover and the differential in the back are way bigger than the sub frame space, is there anything else that has to be done in order to get the unit out, thanks for reading and if any body can point me in the right direction will help me much.

Hi, congrats on wanting to tackle the box yourself its not as daunting as first seems. Yes the engine/box unit seems bigger than the hole it comes out of. Have you removed the starter motor and the oilfilter mounting, inlet/ exhaust manifold? if so you need to arrange the lift to pull the engine up leaning a bit forward(not too much) Yes getting the diff bump out of the subframe requires a bit of pushing and swearing but it does come out. Hi, Now I am starting to doubt myself, Im not sure if the engine needs to be tipped backwards or forwards(its been a few years since I did one)but its all about the diff bump(its bigger on autos) clearing the subframe Jock

Update! after taking the manifolds and filter assembly off the engine its ready to be lifted and needs to lean backwards to clear the subframe.

Yes it needs to tilt back (don't don't yourself jockduck, you know your stuff!), it will be a tight fit getting the front of the gearbox out without hitting the body too much, but it will work.

Later 1275 subframes had a nice little cut out for the start inhibitor switch to pass through

In all case you do NOT need to remove hubs or ball joints at all, even on the latest with A/C you can still remove the engine in the same manner as a manual by sliding it sideways and dropping the RHS (the side of a car is ALWAYS when viewed from the rear looking forwards) then slide it across and drop out the LHS driveshaft.
