Ive read conflicting advice about towing my 96 auto with a rope in an emergency breakdown situation. Should this be attempted at all? Only for short distances? Ignition on or off if possible?
Advice appreciated

Hi Graham, I seem to recall that Rover state the auto Mini should not be towed, however I had to tow my 96' Mini Mayfair for a short distance when the battery died. It did not seem to harm the transmission - which I had checked out following the tow. If possible try to have the front wheels lifted or enquire if a breakdown company could move the car for you just to be on the safe Side. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that, puts my mind at ease, that in an absolute emergency, I wouldn't do the box any harm over a short distance.

I wouldn't recommend towing any auto, but if you do it should be for a very very short distance and not above 20 mph, its always best to get the drive wheels lifted.
