Hi guys. Im picking up my 1985 Austin mini tomorrow and just starting my shopping list. Its been standing for nearly 6 years, previous owner used the halfords classic oil 20w50. Funnily enough the same stuff i use for my rotax engined armstrong mt500 motorcycle. Its the only stuff the clutch on it works properly with.
What do you recomend as a flushing oil for the combined engine and auto box? I didnt want to use the classic oil as i thought it bit of a waste. But also dont want to use something the auto box wouldnt like.
Ill post up a couple of pics over the weekend with some details so you can tell me exactly what ive got myself in to.
Thanks
Gordon

Don't ever put Flushing oil in an Automotive Products Automatic Transmission your transmission wont like it at all Some of it will be Swallowed up by the Torque Convertor and the only option to remove it will be to strip the Transmission and drain the Torque Convertor
Engine flush will only make the Transmission Slip
Its worth Flushing the oil use a cheap 20w50 Mineral Oil to refill run it up to temperature and drain again, you may have to do this more than once to flush the trans once your satisfied its cleared all the old oil out Refill again with a good Quality 20w50 Mineral Oil then with your foot firmly on the Brake Cycle through all the gears several times. But Please do not put Engine Flush or Transmission Stop Leak or Stop Slip etc in the engine it would only cause you more Problems

That was what i wanted to know. cheap 20w50 it will be. Ive already read through the posts on what final oil to use and warnings on additives. Im told everything was running fine when they parked it in the garage. so no known auto faults. Just want to flush out the oil as its over 6 years old. I think its 34 thousand miles. Ill introduce myself properly over the weekend and get some more details on the car.
Thanks again.

Hi, I am in the same dilemma with a car that has been sat a long time. I thought the Auto Mini ran 10W40, anyway how many changes did you do to flush the system? Cheers

You can't 100% flush the system. A couple changes should dilute the old oil enough that it wouldn't matter though. I would just run 10w40 MA2 oil until it gets fully warm then change it. Make sure to drive it not just idle to warm it up so the oil gets everywhere. It will shift better the more you drive it with the proper oil.
I ran 20w50 when I first got my car due to bad advise on forums. I changed to Lucas 10w40 motorcycle oil and it started to improve shifting immediately. It got better the more miles I put on it. My engine is toast but the trans shifted beautifully.

Tarija and Santa Cruz, Bolivia Yep, a few changes will flush it. 10W-40 MA2 for a few hundred miles, then again for a few hundred, and you are probably pretty good. Since Mine had hidden problems, I ended up with 2 changes before I got put any actual km on it, just running in place, then another when I had to pull the converter to seal it after about 100 km. Now with 1000 km on it I will change it when I get back, although it runs nicely and oil looks good.

Can I resurrect this thread, I have an engine that needs flushed through as the age of the oil is unknown. I want to go with 10W-40 MA2 but the Motul is expensive. Would this do the job? 10W40 Motorcycle Oil 4 Stroke JASO MA2 10W-40 20L | eBay r.ebay.com/jwHnxhBeing 20 litres, there is enough to swop several times to get rid of a large percentage of the old oil.

That is fine. Don’t get hung up on brands. We just did a real life traction test on a motorcycle and motul lost

The oil I use is formulated for me by American Petroleum Co. Inc. I usually buy it in 16 drum lots and package it in quarts for retail sale.
