Has anyone any experience on running oil coolers with this automatic transmission ? I have one fitted to my non mini (I know I know) and see them fitted to most tuned minis, I was just wondering ? Any thoughts ?

Is it running very hot? Most people seem to put them on for effect rather than any need to actually cool the oil.
Over cooling can be just as bad as overheating. Most engines like being in the 80 - 90 degree range.

I bought an '89 Metro lump c/w ancillaries and it had the oil cooler. Sold the lump before I got around to trying it. It looked like it came from the factory that way. Anyone know for sure?

Yes, many Metros did have coolers. But note they were a different car with different aerodynamics. Also heavier.
In a Mini, the sump is in airflow - this will have a cooling effect in its own right

When I first started rebuilding my auto gearbox, I spoke to a mate who,s an ex-rover mechanic and done his apprentiship with rover. I asked him about the auto mini,s and metro,s and he said the only one's they had problem with were the metro,s with oil coolers. Could just be a coincidence. I too have got a metro cooler and pipes I was going to fit to mine but not too sure now.
