Hi, following my recent `ignition issues` I have decided to take the plunge and fit electronic ignition. It seems straightforward unless you have a later mini with a ballast resistor in the ignition circuit. Has anyone fitted a Petronix/Aldon/Lumination system to a car similar to mine (1987 with a 59D4 Lucas distributor). It seems that you cannot just fit the + wire from the electronic ignition to the + on the coil if you have the ballast resistor, is this correct and if so where does it go?? Thanks for your help everyone!

Hi all. Thought I`d update you on this as quite a few people have looked at my question and may find my experience useful. In the end I went for a Powerspark kit from DSN classics. Both Powerspark & DSN were really helpful and helped me through the process. The first thing I had to do was take a 12v feed from the live side of the fuse box (as the ballast reduces voltage on start up and the module requires 12v to operate). I used top left of my fuse box as this is only live when ignition is on the II position. (According to powerspark this new supply to the coil must not be fused). I then removed the old points and fitted the kit, instructions that come with the kit are quite good & I found you tube videos useful too. On my distributor (Lucas 59D4) I had to bend the points locating pin out of the way, I was advised to make sure I had a firm grip on it as these sometimes snap off and can fall into the base of the distributor! (Mine didn`t snap and was easy to bend). It was then just a case of connecting - from the ignition module to the - on the coil and connecting the new 12v feed to the + of the module. (Please note that I left the original + from the ballast circuit connected to the + of the coil). Car started 1st time and runs well! I would advise making a note of the timing before you start as this will probably need re-setting afterwards (mine did). Hope that this makes sense and is of some use to someone!

I'm so glad you posted this. I just lost my ballast resistor (left me stranded for 30 min. So now I have decided to go electronic. I try hard not to convert anything in order to stay totally original so I am ordering a Positive earth ignition.

Hi Mark, so glad you found it useful. The good thing about this kit is that car still looks totally original (unless you remove the dizzy cap of course!) Big plus is no more fiddly adjustments or poor quality points & condensers ruining the day! Highly recommend calling Powerspark technical guys, so helpful. Would love to hear know how it goes.
Cheers Mike.
