An update on Mini following my original post last October (19th introducing myself). Some health problems including surgery (me not Mini!) meant I was off the road completely for a while but now back and trying to solve an oil leak problem which is upsetting my neighbours (communal car park). When starting from cold first thing in the morning (oil pressure showing 70+; 50 when warm) she deposits quite a pool of oil under the engine (looks a lot more than it is from checking oil level) but once warm it is just an annoying drip which I could have coped with. So far I've not been able to pinpoint where the oil is coming from. I'm hoping it is just a problem with the oil filter/seal etc but, in case, I've got the gaskets (oil head to front cover and front cover to transmission case). I was disappointed to find that Moss (I have a branch 10 mins away) no longer do anything for autos but got the gaskets from Somerford. However, even they list some things as obsolete/unavailable, one being the clip which holds the control rod seal in on later engines (1992 Sprite 1275). So, my question is if it is this seal how difficult is it to change and is it possible to get the clip out without damaging it to fit a new seal, which Somerford do have? Hoping to tackle the job with my far more knowledgeable Mini-mate next week if there's a fine day.

Good news: a gasket - oil filter base to front cover - and a new filter O ring, solved the problem. Not a drop of oil underneath now after a week and quite a bit of running around. Just posted on my blog (together with the latest on her elder brother Lofty, a 1972 'crossover' VW camper, who will hopefully be taking us to Romania in the summer. Mini took us in 2006). The story will continue from time to time on the blog - grumpytyke.com. Still interested in the question about the control rod seal answer though, for the future.

Good to hear you've fixed the oil leaks. I personally can't answer your question regarding the control rod seal as mines an earlier box, but good luck anyway.

Just a note, be aware that there are 2 different sizes and types of selector seals.

Ok so Iv'e missed "next week" but for future reference... you can do the seal in car, there are 2 different types and sizes and the later "spider" clip is easily removed by gently pulling at the end of the legs, one at a time.. and I think they are still available ..sure I have them in stock.
Also I am making the tooling to rebuild your auto, I carry loads of stock and re manufacture obsolete parts in house.
