Since I had to pull the powerpack and check out the valves (no problem), I pulled the other end covers to inspect and make new gaskets. There was oil leaking from the end cover (opposite the converter). That is when I noticed it was cracked. Since this holds the bearing for the shaft, is it possible that something broke inside and jammed the gears? I wasn't planning on separating the cases. Now I'm worried. How would I check?

Looks to me like the shaft has not been seated in the bearing properly when the casings been tightened. This could cause the cracking, especially if the area of casting around the bearing is depressed. Cant see how jammed gears could cause it. Could be wrong though.

This looks awful, Stu. Can't imagine how this is caused.

I've taken a few pic's of mine for comparison. Mines fine. No damage, but it's still odd how the damage has occurred to yours. There are two different types of bushes depending on whether its an early or late gearbox. I'm not sure if the thicknesses are the same, or whether the damage could occur if you fitted a later cover to an earlier box, or visa versa. Neither do I know if the early or late thrust washers are different thicknesses.
I'd still be keen to know if it's had any external impact damage, as this could be the cause.
The bush is about 12mm long, so any abuse by lateral movement of the shaft while its in the housing could also cause it to crack. This is very unlikely though, as the shaft is still supported by the governor housing collar when it's all in place.
I think it must either be external impact damage or its cracked while tightening the casing onto the gearbox due to an obstruction, misalignment or incorrect / incompatible components.
Looks like it'll need replacing though unfortunately as I can't see how you could repair it.
I can also see some damage to the bush in your photo. I wonder if someones tried to drift out the bush and broken the casing while trying? How long have you owned the gearbox?

Hi everybody! There are some pretty unsympathetic barbarians out there, I have seen damage to the guts of autoboxes done by lack of care, parts assembled in the wrong order and all topped off by the use of extreme force to close covers that wont close. So unfortunately not surprised by the damage. Yes you need to check the whole unit you have to know what the tame gorillas have been up to. Jock

The mystery is solved........... Without a happy ending for now. I'm guessing that this engine/trans combination came out of a car that was whacked on the left side. That would explain the cracked end cap, which I had welded. But before putting it on, I decided I'd better check the clutch discs, as long as I had that end apart. That is when I discovered the friction discs were bent inwards, and what I guess you'd call a pressure plate is shattered. The end cap was pushed in far enough to bend the plates and shatter the plate. I've written to Jpat for prices. It does not want to accept more than one picture......

Ah. Impact damage then. That must have been one heck of a whack to cause that much damage.

Stu, you cannot interchange the early and later pump housings they will not work.
