Hi all! This is my first post on this site so I hope it's in the right place! I own an 86 998 Mayfair auto with 48000 miles on the clock. On our way back from Himley Hall show today my mini decided it wasn't happy and has started violently juddering when moving off from still. It sounds like the wheels are spinning. I had to drive it home using the selector and starting in 2nd (up hills were a nightmare!) see video. youtu.be/pn4CCAqXVK0My knowledge is very limited on this but I'm guessing it's something transmission related. Is it absolutely spannered? What are my options? It's going to have to go to someone for repair as I don't have the skills, but I don't know what's possible with autos in terms of repairs. Any advice and thoughts are very welcome! I don't want to convert it to manual. Thank-you!!

Hi newgamemini, its difficult to tell from your video, is it only juddering on initial take up or also when moving at speed.it could be various things that could cause this, none of which are a quick or cheap fix ,other then making sure your running the correct grade oil. 10w40 and not 20w50 which some owners mistakenly put in. Speak to Martin (MRA) on here, he will know your problem and be able to advise. Tbh if your cars done 48 thou, its done alright to last till now. Also keep it auto, there a dying breed. Good luck.

Hi, thanks for your reply. It happens only on take off, it's fine when it gets going. I've had lots of feedback saying that that the auto gear box is screwed which, like you say, at 48k I can believe. I would like to keep it auto but how do I do that? Is it possible to repair an auto box? Obviously a conversion to manual would be an engine swap....do I just have to find another auto engine and swap it out? I've just switched to 10/40 oil a month or so ago after running 20/50 for the past year(oops) which was probably the final straw for it in fairness. Thanks.

Hi no doubt the cheapest option by far is to pick up a second hand engine and gearbox, but beware you could be buying someone else,s problems. Bearing this in mind any auto now would be at least 20 years old. There are several people who still rebuild these gearbox,s and most parts are still made.A fully rebuilt gearbox will cost you just shy of 900 pounds plus the fitting charge. But that should be good for another 10 years or 50,000 miles with regular oil changes. Its all about your budget. Good luck with your decision.

I can be contacted on martin@kmprecisionengineering.com
That is definitely slippage, and will destroy internals if not already done so already, the good thing about the 998 is it is less prone to self destruct than a 1275.
