Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum, and after reading some posts on here I can see lots of knowledge . I am restoring my mk1 850 auto, I know the original gear box has problems, but I have a spare one, but unsure of the condition. Can someone tell me what parts I need to be sure I'm fitting a good unit, and the cost of overhauling it. I am dead set on keeping it auto, as Morris intended. Thanks chris

Hi Chris, glad you want to keep it auto, they are becoming scarcer, I've just rebuilt mine and it has been a journey which has been fulfilling. Get hold of whatever manuals and service booklets associated with the ap gearbox, although its when you take it apart it all makes sense, I used lots of small and various size tupperware boxes to keep everything seperate, also take lots of photo,s and notes as you go. Martin on here is the AP guru, he,s forgotten what the rest of us know. He rebuild,s and sell,s these gearbox,s but also supplies most parts, seals , gaskets ect for people to diy, plus alway,s availiable by phone for advice. Check out Stu on here, he,s documented a full strip down in photo,s. Good luck with your project. Do you know if you have an Ap1 or Ap11?

Hi, and thank you for your swift reply. To answer your question, AP1 orAP2, I'm not sure. I know the car was built 6/12/66 if that means anything, the 2 engines and gear boxes are still together , so not looked inside one as yet. Can they be identified without splitting them?

Hi. I'm also a 67 mk1 mini owner. If you are on Facebook look for the Mk1 mini register. I'm getting my 850 fully rebuilt by Martin at MRA just as soon as the time is right. i.e. When the shell is finished. Good luck.

If its all original it will be an Ap1. The original 850 was fitted with an AP1.
Look at the shifter on the gearbox if it has 7 positions R N D 1234 then its an original AP1
However if one them has only 6 positions then its still an AP1 (later revision) Which will also fit.

Thank you for the information, I think I have 2 AP1 gearboxes by the look of it. Anyone got a ball park price for a service kit for them?

Hi Chris, personally I would first strip down both gearboxes, that way you can pick the best (least wear) components from the pair, at best you can get away with changing all rubber seals and gaskets, the 3x brake bands, forward friction plates and reverse+top friction plates. Have you checked out Todd Martin,s rebuild piece on the Austin America website?.

I've not seen a lot about the ap gear box to be honest, but I know I'm in the right place for info. I have a copy of the ap automatic transmition service manual, looks ok. At the moment I have about 3 weekends work on the shell before its off to my brothers paint shop for prep and paint. When it's out the way I can clean up my garage and get stuck in to the engine

Some of us don't believe in the all exposing Facebook. Is this the only place they are located?

Fair enough. It's just a meeting place for mk1 auto owners. Nothing is compulsory.

So one has to be on Facebook?

Facebook is a very easy way of forming groups for people with similar interests. It's free. Alternatively a website etc has costs involved. It was just an idea. I don't really think people care how many mk1 autos are left really. It was more fit my personal curiosity.
