Hi Nick, welcome to the forum.looks like a real beaut you've got there. I don't suppose you have much problem with tinworm in NewZealand. Good to see someone using the correct oil. Mini auto,s are not everyone's cup of tea but we love em on here.

No tinworm anywhere!...... clearcoat on the boot has gone milky in the sun (we have high UV down here) but that's being fixed next week. Give all the credit to using the correct oil to local mini club and confirmed by this forum. I did get a strange look from the garage man when I said I wanted the bike oil in it though

Quick mini update
Mini is back from the bodyshop....the clearcoat has been repaired and its very shiny, couple of chips fixed too and the faded MAYFAIR II stripes removed....The metallic green looks heaps better without them.
Have fitted LED daytime running lights under the front bumper....now they see us coming!, and some LEDs inside to illuminated the auto selector and switch panel, which makes night time driving nicer.
Fixed the drivers window winder as it had jumped a tooth so the window wound up crooked
Currently cleaning the underside of the floor, ready for a nice smooth coat of rubber based undercoat...no rust anywhere under the old crusty dried out underseal
New shelf speakers next on the shopping list
Went out with the Nelson Mini Club over to Blenheim car and air museum link
Bye

Spoke too soon
Just replaced head gasket!...while it was in pieces we did the water pump and hoses and flushed rad, all back together now and runs great....but....the cooling fan and front and rear sidelights have stopped working....sigh
But I did replace the speakers so at least I have something to listen too while fixing it ....

At least you did,nt make the usual mistake of overlooking the radiator, tbh they should be taken off and back flushed every 5 years in my opion. At least you have the electric fan option (even if it does,nt work),lol.

Hi
So its been 2 months since our last confession.......side lights turned out to be a dodgy fuse and the cooling fan had stopped because the wire fell off the sensor. We also bought some mesh headlamp guards to protect the new Halogen headlamps
My dearly beloved and I have been out on a couple of mini club Sunday drives which tend to end somewhere with hot beverages, cake and ice cream and a carpark full of minis!
Merry Christmas!

and...in breaking news Did you know if you unbolt the Japanese vacuum operated exhaust recirculation loop (2 BSP bungs needed to fill the holes in the exhaust downpipe and inlet manifold)your Japanese spec mini runs much much better and a bit cooler

Yeah, i would,nt be surprised. I know its done for emission,s, but pumping exhaust gases into intake can never be good for an old a series engine!.

Oh no where did a whole year go . Last winter was quiet, just tootled around when there was a sunny sunday When summer came (Dec-Feb in NZ) mini suffered with over fueling issues meaning we had difficulties hot starting and even came home once on the back of an AA truck... .. all fixed now after a carb rebuild, new fuel pump and a new carb/exhaust heat shield. Still managed to do the Christmas parade with the Nelson mini club, on probably hottest day of the holidays 28C in december! We have also managed to wear out the front tyres over 6000kms...mostly on the inner edge, so this winter we are rebuilding the front suspension with new cones, tierod bushes and 25% uprated shocks at least. In October we are catching the ferry to Wellington for the 2018 NZ mini nationals for 4 days of mini madness...having the slowest mini in our club means we are going to be spectators for the speed events so plan on concentrating on shinyness for the show and shine and our map reading skills on the treasure hunt. laters!

Suspension got the rebuild as planned, 1 tie rod was bent, all the bushes destroyed and the cones were shockingly squashed. We did find a previous owner had tried to solve the collapsed cones by fitting hilos and winding them up!..all this did was make for a shockingly harsh ride and wear the tyres out. With the new cones and the hilos set mid adjustment the ride is so much nicer. The hot start problem re-emerged again... ...and was eventually traced to a problem with the float chamber lid. With the top off the carb we could see the fuel level in the jet tube was a bit too high, indicating the level in the float chamber needed to be lower. So we worked out we really needed 2 washers under the needle valve to set the float height lower, but the float stop on the lid was stopping the float from dropping enough for the needle valve to actually open. We could have filed the stop down a bit but one of the guys from mini club had a few spare lids so we swapped in one of his with a new viton tipped needle valve and now it starts first time all the time...only took a year on and off to fix that..hohum! Other 'things' we have done: The multibox japanese emission exhaust was scrapped in favour of a freeflow exhaust and chrome tip...oohh shiny. Air horns fitted when the standard horn stopped honking and started sounding like a hamster with a sore throat Accessory port for phone and GPS charging New battery...probably due to excess cranking to get it started when hot Countdown is on for the NZ nationals next week and the new boot panels still need to be carpeted, the oil changed and a lot of cleaning and polishing done
