1st gear not engaging properly.

I have a 1985 Austin Mini City E Auto and recently had a problem where 1st gear sometimes engages and sometimes doesn't. It has been recommend that I change the oil as it has not been done in AT LEAST 18 months. Some people have suggested 10w40, some have suggested 20w50. People say that thicker oil will be better as it will help the gears engage. But what is the best oil to use for this? Any recommendations or links? Thanks, Lewis

Use 10w40, it,ll be better for your clutches and bands, must be Ma2.
