My mini hasn't been on the road for a few years (since I've owned it) but it was driven to me when I bought it so it certainly drives to some degree.
I'm in the final stages of getting it on the road and while pushing it in and out of the garage I have noticed the gear stick/selector is very loose and flappy.
It wobbles about left and right and to me moves too freely/loosely up and down the gear selections too.
Is this a common issue? What do I need to do?

What type selector? Does it have the lift up toggle?.

No lift up on it no. Had another play with it this morning and maybe the left/right wobble isn't so bad, it feels a bit loose like the spring back to the left could be better but maybe that's just how they are? (Never driven an auto mini before) As for sliding up and down the it still feels a little too lose to me, doesn't feel like a positive selection on any of them, especially 1 which feels like it would jump up or down from a good bump in the road. I'm sure it'll only ever be driven using P R & D but I just feel like each should be a more positive selection. I could of course just be talking rubbish and that's just how they are!

It should feel fairly fluid, but you wont necessarily feel the notches when you change gear. It should,nt be flapping around though. Mine is sprung to one side.

Cheers, I took it apart today and looks like it's been apart before, cleaned it up and seems a bit better now. Was surprised to see the bulb had also melted the white plastic it sits in and had fallen out!

Yeah, mines like that too, it must be a common issue. Will be replacing the bulb with a cooler running led type.

I can be contacted on martin@kmprecisionengineering.com Rover had some really poorly trained electrical engineers back then, the same team that allowed a power cable to be split and passed through 2 terminals caused lots of thermal event
