Hello all
I have just purchased a 1998 mini with an auto box which judders into top gear. I will no doubt be asking for advice once I have worked out what is going on or not going on?

How does your oil look? Do you know what oil is in it?

First step for any car I buy is change all fluids. In this specific case, you need to change the oil, putting in a ma2 motorcycle oil, 10W-40. That should help, although since some oil remains in the converter, it is really the second or third change that makes the most difference.
Once you have the right oil in it, that part can be eliminated from the diagnostics.

Mine flares when changing from 3rd to 4th. To overcome this, I put the gear selector into position 3 as soon as the car goes into 3rd itself. I then back off the accelerator and select D once I reach at least 30 mph, and allow the transmission to go into 4th gear. This should preserve the automatic box until I can afford to do a manual conversion.
Cheers,
Ian
