My car has now run for about 1,200 miles throughout the entire summer. There has not been any oil leaks until two days ago. When I started the engine and moved the car forward, I found a large pool of oil on the drive. Turn out the canister has decided to leak at the top of the main seal.
My question is this. Is it possible the filter was so plugged that the oil pressure increased even though there is a filter bypass hole inside? With others having leakage problems at the seal, I thought it was a good idea to ask. Maybe this was their problem too.

Tarija and Santa Cruz, Bolivia It should go through the bypass valve unless somehow it jammed. You could check it. But the canister should have 14 ft lb torque. It might have loosened if it was not that tight. But don't go beyond that or the end of the canister will start caving in.

Does this apply to the long canister or the fat one? I have the fat one.

I am experiencing same problem, already tried everything. Oil continues to leak after changing filter, the O-Ring moves from its position. I only was able to fit the small one, the bigger one doesn’t seem to fit. Any ideas? Any other way to seal?
Thanks!

The first time I changed my oil I discovered that there were 2 rubber seals. Someone hadn't removed the old one from the recess before fitting the new one. Is that the same in your case? You usually get two rubber seals supplied with an oil filter. I can't remember which of the two I used but the correct one fits in nice and snug and stays put. Don't forget to check the 'o' ring on the hex end of the bolt and replace if necessary. Is the metal canister in good condition? If the end that fits against the seal in the engine is uneven in anyway, you'll struggle to get a seal. Torque the canister bolt to 19Nm
Hope this info helps.
