Well, after curing my no-4th-gear problem a new one has arisen. For a few days it shifted flawlessly. Then, after it warmed up the other day, my D position started acting up. At first it was not going into 4th gear, but all gears work just fine when I shift manually. I have adjusted the shift cable linkage numerous times but continue to read that it can be a problem if it is off by just a bit. I also installed headers on the engine, so I bought heat wrapping to take that out of the equation. What I am wondering is if my shift cable is the problem. When I adjust everything per the manuals, I end up with my cable adjusting nuts maxxed out (closest to the shifter/back of car).
I don't mind putting it through the gears manually, but I'd like it back to normal. And one fine one day and not the next?
Update 10/9/19 - After thinking about it, I think my problem actually lies in the governor or governor linkage. When I put it in D, it never goes above 1st gear. If I shift manually, it is fine, but if I drop it into D, after 4th gear, there is nothing --- probably due to the fact that it is moving and 1st should not engage. So I am thinking that possibly the governor is not moving or the linkage came loose and the governor valve is not moving. I'll find out tonight...
Thanks for your input in advance.

UPDATE #2 10/10/19 - So, I did some adjustments (that I've done before) and took it for a ride. Fine tuned the shifter again. Took it for another ride. Same stuff. 1st gear condition in D.
Did I happen to mention that it is dark out when I take it for a ride? And for some reason I keep on blowing my tail light/instrument light fuse???
So. I am driving without seeing the speedometer.
So I took a flash light with me this time and lo and behold. The speedo is not moving!!!
If the speedo is not moving, something is wrong with the drive or cable...Yep, the thing that is driven by the governor, which controls the shifting!
I can't make this stuff up! Unbelievable.
More fun tomorrow with the temp dropping to the 40s here in Wisconsin. Stay tuned!
UPDATE #3 10/21/19 I thought that one of my cast iron rings on the forward clutch popped loose, but it was more than that.
Now, how to pull the two roll pins in the blind holes so that I can use a spare forward clutch I have (but the basket itself is not in good shape).
