Hi. i found my way to this great forum whilst trying to find out information on how to change an oil seal for the gear selector rod. Although i didn't find a complete description i did get the gist that people had done the job so i thought id have a go. So for anyone looking for the same kind of information this is how i did it . I first drained the oil. I removed the linkage cover, then undid the linkage pivot bolt and the bolt that goes onto the drop down bit on the rod , i could then turn the linkage to one side out of the way. Then i undid the nut on the end of the rod and with an open ended spanner levered the drop down piece off of the rod. I managed to hook the old seal out with the bent end of a scribe and found that it had gone hard and obviously thats why it was leaking so badly. Having put some oil around the lip of the new seal i slid it onto the rod and put some locktite onto the outer edge to help hold it, there is supposed to be a star washer i believe to hold these seals in but mine was missing and i didn't have a new one so i used the locktite which is a trick i picked up from years of working on lambrettas and vespas. I then pushed the oil seal home with a deep 13mm socket and tapped it into place with a hammer. Reassembled the linkage etc, refilled with oil and the job seems to have worked well, no more oil leak. This was done on a 1983 mayfair , all work was done with the engine unit in car. Hope this helps someone in the future.

I can be contacted on martin@kmprecisionengineering.com The star washer is a special item, it will fit all AP 1 & 2 units and is a good idea to use one but not necessary on a 998 unless you have turbocharged it... your loctite should give you no issues Happy miniing AP parts ... www.ap2.world
