On the image it shows a lever that is moved from left to right when the throttle is opened by the correct amount. If it is pushed to far the spring compresses and when you take your foot of the throttle the arm moves back to the right. I removed the bit that goes through the hole in the gearbox to replace the gasket when cleaning up our replacement engine and gearbox. The strange thing is my arm with the spring on seems to fit ok but only works when I move the arm left to right - you can feel some mechanical resistance as if is doing its job but pulling instead of pushing. I've tried all sorts of fiddling about but as the engine is now back in the car it is a little bit awkward as all my movements are looking over the engine. So what have I done not done ? Would appreciate any help.

Hi, yes access while installed is difficult, I just checked and the governor bearing moves to the left as the speed rises, the finger on the throttle/kickdown needs to be on the left of the bearing (assuming you are behind the G/box looking forward) it holds the governor up from moving holding the the gearbox in a lower gear.
