Hi folks i have a 67 mk1 auto that has a gearbox problem, it pulls into forward gears fine but has nothing in reverse. Not knowing to much about transverse auto's i was wondering if there is a common problem with them that is an easy fix. I quite like the idea of leaving it auto but appanantley it can be very expensive to fix the ap gearbox. Any thoughts and advice would be very much welcome. cheers lester

Hi Lester and welcome to the register Don't worry it can be fixed i don't have the answers but our Mini Boris had the same problem he lost reverse and following a rebuild hes in rude health again Boris had his Transmission fully rebuilt by Mra Minis it cost £850 though we did have to have work carried out to our torque converter otherwise it would of been £800 So worst case scenario is Around £800ish for a full rebuild though you could buy an exchange unit for around £500 fully rebuilt if you can do the labour yourself Or you could get another engine/gearbox secondhand thats done a lower mileage than yours and either transplant both or separate the engine and box and just use the donor engine? As its a 67 please keep it auto it would be sacrilege to convert it Huggz Jodie

thanks for the quick response, i work in the motortrade and am quite skilled in older cars, it's a 67 Morris Super Deluxe in tweed grey and has only done 41000, it runs like a goldwatch. If i can diagnose the problem i can do it myself i think, but as i said i am not familiar with ap transmissions i can do conventional auto's just need some guideance with the ap. cheers les

Hi Lester - this may sound really foolish, but have you checked the oil level? Otherwise it may well be a clutch or brake band problem Emma

The Australian Morris 1100 Workshop manual has a fairly good fault diagnosis guide.... Fault. Slip in reverse. Diagnosis and Rectification Sequence 4, 5 and 6.
Diagnosis and Rectification Chart 4: Check the reverse gear band adjustment or remove the valve block and check the reverse servo feed pipe 'O' ring seals. 5: Remove the valve block and clean; regulator valve or reverse booster piston faulty. 6: Check the top and reverse clutch booster piston or shut-off valve.

If the car is driving OK in the forward gears then the Top/Reverse clutch is probably alright, I guess the first step would be to do a pressure check using the tapping point on the filter to see if you are getting the correct oil pressure in reverse. If not its a valve block problem or possibly an oil pipe/seal issue. If the oil pressure is good most likely the reverse servo/band. I have not done it myself but it is possible to remove the front cover and access the valve block, servo and band adjustment. If all that does not work then its engine out time! takes about two hours, its harder to get an autodonk out compared to the manual because its bigger and heavier, a clubman would be simple by comparison. The Autobox is reasonably easy to overhaul 60's engineering inside, my pet weak point is the forward clutch, I have a small collection of worn ones. I could talk for hours on the things if you want to hear more!!
