Hi, I have a 1976 mini 850 automatic original invalid carriage. Engine and auto box are great with no problems whatsoever. Gears change as they should, smooth through all 4 gears. I find it just a bit slow. Maximum speed i have had out of the wee mini is 57mph and very slow at getting there. Would a 998 or 1000cc engine fit my automatic gearbox? What mod's would i need to do, if any, to fit a 998 or 1000cc to my gearbox. John.

Hi, yes an automatic 998 engine would fit, I don't think there would be any gearing changes. You top speed seems very slow. even though 850s did have a reputation of being sluggish, are you sure the engine is good tune? My stockish 998 will run up to 75-80 mph. Jock

Bought the car last week. Starts good and took it for a run round the streets in my town. found it very slow and sometimes had to pull the choke out to pull away from junctions. Other than the slowness of it the wee mini is great condition. When the mini was in for it's mot, the tester adjusted the carb on it, don't know why as the garage i bought it from got it Mot'd before it was delivered to me. I take it i will have to buy an automatic engine as opposed to a manual?

Auto and manual blocks are different mostly in the oiling channels. Sounds to me you had the carb detuned by that guy. Maybe it was to pass emissions or something. Have you got a copy of the manual? Mark

Mark Thanks Mark. Yes i knew the manual and auto engines were different. And yes, the mot guy adjusted it for emissions for mot. I wasn't present at the mot as it was done in Peterborough before i got it delivered to me in Scotland. I don't yet have a copy of the manual at the moment. Going to order a Haynes manual, probably from ebay. Never liked the SU Carbs, is there a manual specific to the SU Carbs?. Going to pull the plugs today or tomorrow to see what colour the are. 850 Engine was fully rebuilt around 3 years ago by the company that fully restored the wee mini. Any advice on adjusting the carb? The wee mini is an original invalid carriage and still has it's Government invalid ID and date plate on the front bulkhead. John.
