Hi, Can anyone provide me with a procedure on how to replace a selector shaft seal on a 998 autobox? I have a 1993 Jap spec 998 carburated auto mini. Any photos to go with the procedure would be very helpful. There are serveral strings that talk about this issue on this forum but nothing that I could find that really spells it out in detail. Thank you in advance for any help!I am located in Florida. Miguel minimc@aol.com

Hi Miguel
The simplest way is to jack up the RHS of you mini and support on an axle stand or similar for safety
Remove the selector cover (2 x1/2” AF hex headed bolts) And the cover will drop down
In your case you should be able to remove the small spring clip holding the selector quadrant in place
Now lightly grip the edge of the “cotton reel” (using smooth pliers or grips) and undo the 1/4” unf nut (7/16” AF) once removed then pull off the cotton reel
Clean away any dirt and oil from around the seal
Remove the seal clip by careful use of a hook tool or small flat screwdriver
Using a slightly larger screwdriver prise out the seal
Clean away any dirt and oil that is left
And using a deep socket (unless you have the special seal fitting tool) press the new seal in to position
Refit the clip
Refit the cotton reel and but
Then refit the selector quadrant chrck cable adjustment and fit cover
Now start up and check for oil leakage,
Now enjoy 👍🏻😊

Perhaps this should be a pinned post Martin, as this as it seems to be a recurring question, one of the many common leak points.

I'm not a fan of pinned posts as I believe they contract the forum by stopping discussion, what do you think ?
