Hello All, I'm rebuilding what I believe is an APIIb box. When assembling the converter end plate complete with low pressure regulator, it would not go fully home. On investigation the white Teflon sleeve, which goes on the end of the gearbox input shaft and acts as a oil seal into the bore of the pressure regulator, was preventing assembly. Looking closer there was not a undercut/groove for the seal to sit in. There is some clearance between the shaft and the bore of the pressure regulator, so I was expecting an oil seal of some description to prevent the oil just spilling out instead of going to the torque converter.
On researching, I've found 3 types of pressure regulator. The one I have has 2 tapped holes in the back with bolts and copper sealing washers. I've seen a similar one but without these 2 tapped holes, and lastly one with tapped holes and fitted with a temperature sensor so making it a thermostatic valve, presumably to vary pressure with temperature. Perhaps this was from the South African factory.
Manuals show a seal on the shaft at this position but do not explain what type they are and no mention is made of it in the write up.
Has anyone any experience of this anomaly?
