Greetings all,
Delighted to be a member of this excellent forum.
I am in the process of restoring my late grandad's 1967 MG 1100 Mk1 auto. The MG 1100 auto was never officially available in a Mk1, so this one is a bit special. It has been off the road laid up since Dec 1981 and has done 36k miles. My grandad bought it around the time I was born - about 1973.
I am doing a full restoration, having started ten years ago but delayed due to three little people being born. The 'stay at home' scenario this last year or so prompted me to get back on it last June and it will soon be ready to start up, having finished the underside, fitted brand new front and rear subframes and virtually completed the engine bay. I am taking pot luck on the engine and 'box, having last run it 20 years ago and all seemed fine. I have bought Motul 10W40 MA2 motor cycle oil to put in and am hoping (after cranking on starter first, plugs out etc.) that she will be okay... I have a manual power unit but want to stay as an auto, as the ADO16 gear change was never exactly a pleasure!
I am already finding lots of useful info on this forum, so thank you.
Paul

Hello to a fellow ADO16 owner. I have a 1969 Austin America automatic. 36,000 on the clock. I've yet to see anyone not get the help they need from this forum. May I suggest you also join the BMC1100 club. Great bunch of people from all over the globe.

I am also a member of the 1100 club and ado16.info, so great to know so much support is out there. Here is a pic of the almost completed engine bay:

Hello Paul,
It looks like you have done all the correct things, changing the oil is a must, was there any water inside when you drained the oil ?

Hi, no the oil appeared free from water and was clean, as my dad changed it years ago and it has barely been run since.

Absolutely. I'm not going to be complacent - just keeping everything crossed and will hopefully find out in the next week or so.
Update to follow...

So, I had the moment of truth a few days ago and got the old girl running. I put in new Motul 10w40 MA2 oil and filter first and cranked up some oil pressure without the plugs.
She then fired up nicely and I'll admit to feeling very apprehensive about putting her into drive...
She seems okay. I'm not going to get too excited yet but have been up and down the lane quite a few times and she's changed up and down through the gears in 'D' and manual selection works too.
I have now taken delivery of another batch of oil and so am going to warm her right up and change it again.
The only issue I can see is a drip from the selector rod. Martin - can you supply the seal and is it easy to change?
Thanks.

I can be contacted on martin@kmprecisionengineering.com It's not too difficult to change, can be a little fiddly, but easier in an 1100/1300 as the subframes are a little bigger and yes I have early or later types in stock, I would just need to know the diameter of the selector rod, if you have a 7mm open ended spanner just slip it over the rod, if it fits the rod is 1/4" if it doesn't fit the rod is 5/16"

Thanks Martin. On closer inspection I think it might be the torque converter or low pressure valve area. Will give you a shout when I get round to investigating further. I might well need a puller from you! I am hoping if the convertor needs to come off that I can do it in situ. There is more room than a Mini.
