Hi all, At last people who can offer advice on an automatic. Mine is off the road at the moment because the ring gear keeps jamming against the starter motor. I can only get it started by taking off the starter motor each time! After a long time scratching my head, trying to seek advice and wondering how to fix it I bought a manual engine to convert it. I am currently tinkering with the manual engine which is on a subframe in my garage. However I am having second thoughts about converting it so please persuade me that fixing my auto engine would be easier than converting to a manual.

Cheers Minisniper,
Its a 1984 Austin Mini 998engine, cream with a chocolate brown roof. Original seats and the centre speedo.
Would be a shame not to keep it original but I also want to get it back on the road asap.
I suppose I could run it on a manual until I figure out how to fix the auto engine and then convert it back.

Yes I understand what you are saying, it would be nice to keep it original and perhaps what you have said is a way forward positively. I'm sure someone on here will be able to help you sort out the problem. Perhaps Jodie can throw you a line of advice.

Hiya, nice looking mini you have there. Have you fitted a new starter recently or checked the operation of your current one? Its possible that its either the wrong starter motor, or the armature in the starter motor is not returning to its rest position. Its a lot of work to convert it to a manual then back to an auto again.

Hi all,
Have a thread running in the transmission section on this topic.
It is a lot of work converting it, its taking me a long time to get the manual engine into a useable state. However the thinking behind it is that I can start using the car again whilst I figure the problem out at the moment the poor thing is feeling neglected.
