HI Yes you have to remove the heater to remove the piece of carpet. You will see 2 screws behind your heater control going up into the bottom rail. Remove these and the heater will drop down. Then if you look at the back of the heater you will see some hook shaped things which the heater will be resting on, you may have to slacken 2 nuts 1 either side (think they are 7/16").Then you will be able to lift the heater of and just let it sit on the floor. you will be able to remove the carpet then. (you do not need to disconnect the heater hose's). Hope this helps A Douglas

www.minimania.com/web/threadid/97049/msgthread.cfmRemove the two screws from the lower rail on either side of the switch panel, that should allow the whole heater box to swing downward. In the back its held to the firewall by two pegs that are just sitting in hooks - note that the pegs are threaded and there may be nuts on the end snugging it up against the pegs. As it swings downward be sure to undo the electrical connection for the fan switch. Undo the upper and lower coolant hoses - be sure that you have a jar or pan to catch the water that you will get coming out. Unhook the one big and the two small ducts. Remove the unit from the car. Remove the screws on the side of the heater box where the water inlet/outlets are. Make sure you note the one screw in the front's location that is shorter than the others (it has a flat, not pointed end) - its located closest to the air flap to keep it from hitting the flap when you move it to close it up. The heater matrix should just pull out, accompanied by old leaves, dead bugs, and old crumbly foam that the ends of the core were wrapped in. Even if the core is still fine, you'll probably want to flush it out with high pressure water several times back and forth from each outlet (you won't believe how much rust and crud those things trap) and remove the old crumbly foam and replace with new foam like from a windowstrip type of weatherstripping. Clean up the fan and inside and reassembly is the reverse of removal, as they say. Don't forget to put the one flat scew back in the correct spot!
