I did once try this...... ;D ;D ;D But I have to admit it was many years ago, in my younger days. So I'm not recommending this particular application!!!! I had an engine that had all the cooling system internals rusted up and blocked. Being short on cash, I put in vinegar in a 50/50 mix and left over night. Next day - all the rust was gone, down to bare metal!!! As I said though - this was in my younger days....Maybe I would do it today on suspension parts and stuff, but not in the engine ;D ;D ;D

Well as i was the one who started this i guess i should try Picture this,we had Boris about a month and i took his bumpers off,and all the bolts sheared i repaired the bumper replaced all the washers and threw all the old rusty ones away apart from one that was for some reason placed to one side in the flat Well Boris has now gone to new owners and those old bumper have long been replaced but as this one rusty washer is still here i may as well experiment on it before i throw it away here is the washer and here is the rust dissolving kit (crunchy nut cornflakes optional) ;D Fill Jar with Vinegar and add Rusty Washer Sit Back and wait Im going to leave it in there for a week then ill update you all Somebody may have to remind me otherwise it may live in the jar for a further two years ;D Huggz Jodie

well its been less than 24 hours and theres already a bright shiny bit about the size of my little fingernail so I'm guessing it does work though i don't want to spoil things so I'm leaving it in there for a week as planned I know theres that old wives tale about coca cola but though coke can remove corrosion it appears to need to be kept fizzy and one you put anything in cola the reaction turns it flat I one took a very rusty letterbox off a door at a previous home and replaced it as its mounting had snapped but before i threw it away i put it in an old ice cream tub and covered it in lashings of out of date brown sauce that had been forgotten at the back of the cupboard Id heard rumors about Brown Sauce and it didn't disappoint a week later and a quick buff off i had a brand new looking (but still broken) door knocker Huggz Jodie

Probably the acetic acid in the brown sauce. Malt vinegar will remove rust but the clear vinegar is cheaper. It's just acetic acid diluted.

i think its great that everyday things can be used We all pay a tad too much for fancy car related products and sometimes there are other alternatives I just used malt vinegar because its what i had to hand but i guess white vinegar would be even better as you would see it change colour as the rust dissolved into it I'm also guessing things like Onions, and Juice squeezed from a lemon would attack rust too? Theres also that process with soda crystals in water then putting voltage through a strip of foil in the water, think its called electrolysis or something like that? i wonder if you had non removable panels on a car and you brushed vinegar into rust scabs it would do the same thing? i read a thing on another forum one about a process of rubbing tin foil over rust as a rust converter similar to kurust ill see if i can find it

i,m going to try this at the weekend on an old 12g295 cylinder head that i,m going to rebuild. would the vinegar affect the valve guides in any because they are not worn and i,m going to reuse them?

If they are steel guides they should be fine but I'd block each end with grease first, just to be safe.

They have come out great I believe White Vineger is better and often cheaper i just used our common old "Fish n Chips" vineger we had in the cupboard I think its probably just best to use whatever is cheapest asda do smart price vinegar at just 13p a bottle

its amazing what DIY everyday objects you can use instead of branded "Automotive" alternatives Another one i wrote of on here was Tin Foil and Olive Oil causes a Thermite reaction to cause a aluminum galvinisation a kind of DIY Cheapo Kurust if you like Couldn't help but chuckle this morning as i wondered if you regularly washed all your rusty scabs with vinegar would it dissolve the rust? then you could simply coat them with Olive Oil and vigorously rub with Tin Foil until all the rust disappeared ;D ;D ;D

I think it could be done with 2000 litres of concentrate in a bug tub
