Just been having a serious conversation on the telephnophone with minisniper about Dafs
It was Serious Honest ;D
Well now Lea is fascinated and wants to know what a Daf Looks like
There were other Rarer Models but generally the More Common were the
33
44
55
66
until they were bought out by Volvo in 1975 who rebaged the 66 as a Volvo 66
and inherited Dafs Design for a new Variomatic the Daf 77,which incidentally was never to see the light of day as a Daf but Became the Volvo 300 series
Daf77
Volvo 300
So what is the Variomatic?
This
The whole transmission was mounted withing the rear Axel/suspension unit and linked to the engine via a prop shaft to the back of the conventional front mounted Engine
there were no gear as such just constant variable gear ratios ie (CVT) so it was always in the right gear whatever you threw at it
I particularly like the little 33 but with its 750cc air cooled engine it was no Racer
All round and for Classic charm the 44 is the best bet
Dafs are Dutch by the way and even a Show Winning car will only set you back around £1500 these days and a tidy clean everyday cars are around £750
Interestingly Enough Alec Issigonis was intrigued by the drive system and developed something Similar in the Prototype 9xGearless which he was often seen driving right up to his death
The 9X Gearless is now in the Motor Heritage Centre at Gaydon
Just think if British Leyland hadn't Shelved the project we would all be Bombing around in CVT Minis now with Ultra Smooth Acceleration with no sensation of changing gears whatsoever
Heres a little movie of a variomatic in action,Enjoy
And one Working whilst the car is being driven
Seen through the inspection panel under the rear seat
Right lets discuss this
Lea?
Lea?
Once you've stopped Laffing ;D ;D ;D
