My non-Mini is a bit of a beast. A moderately subtle beast, but a beast nevertheless. I have a 1984 VW Type 25 Transporter camper (that's the later "brick", not a bay or splittie). The colour is a very in-your-face citron with white top - like a giant lemon meringue! But otherwise it looks mostly like a normal VW camper. Until you go round the back, where there are some subtle modifications. The untrained eye might not notice the bumper extension, or the extended centre panel. The clue lies in the single "V8" badge on the tailgate. For lurking under that engine bay is a Rover 3.5 litre V8 engine! You can tell by the sound - it growls! And by the way it leaves BMWs standing at traffic lights! There is so much power on tap, that, mated to the VW 5-speed gearbox, 1st gear is completely redundant, and second is only for a quick getaway! I can happily drive anywhere using just 3rd & 5th! It's still classed as a project because there are one or two issues I still have to solve. Cooling is marginal with the electric water pump (no room to drive the original one!) and the heater doesn't work. And it still leaks oil badly despite completely regasketing the engine - a P6 V8 makes an A-series seem oil-tight! Once I overcome those it will just be a great drive. Must update some pics there...

As far as I can tell it gets around 18mpg - which is about the same as the original 1.9 litre engine!

That looks really great. I must admit there is nothing like the sound of a V8 or possibly a Merlin, but a bit big to go in a camper

Actually I've seen a Merlin close up - it could be fitted as a mid-engine if anyone were insane enough to try!
