Have had an auto box sitting at work for ages that I removed as the box was starting to slip. I have to say It was a lot easier to strip down then I thought it would be and quite intresting seeing how it all works. I discovered that the forward motion clutch plates were very worn and that 2 of the brake bands were showing signs of wear. The box has covered approx. 79k, but while stripping it down I did notice that there were sings that someone had done it in the past. Emailed Jpat and got told the parts i needed were out of stock until mid october so might see if I can get the parts through Rimmerbros. So thats how it stands at the moment, I did notice that the brake band solenoids were out of adjustment as well, so am hoping that all this added up to the cause of the slipping. Gary

Hi Gary,
I think this is really interesting - perhaps I need help! Gearboxes are a complete mystery to me (and most other people).
Are you planning a full recondition of the box or just replacing the worn parts?
It would be great to know how you get on and (approx) how much it costs if you don't mind sharing this with us.
Keep us updated.
Paul

Did email MRA but they never replied, must be busy i guess. Yes, the plan is to refurb the box and then swap it for the faulty one I have in my green mini(was in for sale section) Thought it might help if i added a photo of the parts in situ. This is what you see if you remove the front cover. On the left of the picture you can see the three solenoinds for operating the brake bands. On the right is the remaining part of the valve block after I removed the gallerys. Striping the valve block down today, I descovered a load of gunk. Looks like a previous owner has missed some oil changes in the past. The oil also had a distinct odour of petrol to it. I can only assume that in the past the fuel pump diaphram has split(not good for the engine internals) Front cover of valve blockCenter section of valve block with shuttle valves at the top of the pictureGave it a good clean in parfin, but forgot to take photos, so more tomorrow.

This looks like a really interesting topic and I think most of our members will be interested in it and it also gives us an insight into the inner workings. I will be watching this closely

Hope you got the MOT for your bike. Can't wait for your next update perhaps if you do a write up you could put a topic in the "how to" section so our members have got a guide to go to if they need help on how to do something Once again great and interesting topic Lea

Old, but very interesting thread. I've been thinking about what it looks like inside and how much to take apart when I get to it in a couple of weeks.
