Thought I'd start a new thread in here , rather than carring on in the "Introduce yourself here" thread Well , its taken me all morning but I've got the short-block all pulled down. So I'll be taking it to the engine machinest on monday. You've all probably seen these types of pic's before , but though I'd put some up of where we're at , , , man these things take up a lot of room when ya pull them down !!! The Mini My 2 piece crank Idler Gear - Thrust Bearing - Damage to housing The bits spread out Valve Train components in removal order (Block of wood is an old idea my grandfather used) Shrapnel

I must say you are very tidy. I've never seen a broken crank before, amazing.

Hiya mate, nice little rebuild you got there. What do you think caused the failure?

Hiya mate, nice little rebuild you got there. What do you think caused the failure? Not sure , I think the crank has had crack in it for a while, and the spun bearing hasn't helped , possibly generated a bunch of excess heat though lack of lubrication !!! Shrapnel

Dropped the block and "2 Piece Crank " off to the machiest today, he's gonna look at it in the next day or two to see if the block is still useable. He did say that there's been something major wrong with it for some time for it to have worn a ridge in the main journal like it has Shrapnel

Unfortunatly this update is not as well as I'd hoped for it to have been. Had a phone call from the engine rebuilder today. The middle bearing has been spinning in the block for quite some time , and to a point where the hole is way bigger than it should be , and no amount of line-boreing is going to fix it Hes told me its Scrap , Bin material , Ballast for an Anchor Even after I told him how hard they are to come by in New Zealand , and was he sure it couldn't be saved ? He still told me to junk it. He then said he'd have another close look and talk to some people about having the block built up then machineing it , but told me to not get my hopes up. So , I've just informed the person we got the car off of the findings and are hoping he may be able to help out some how. Once again we wait . Shrapnel

Can you get it metal sprayed and then machined back to size

Can you get it metal sprayed and then machined back to size From the way he was talking , I got the impression it needs some major build-up . He mentioned that having a sleve made , machining the journal bigger in diameter , fitting the sleve , then line boaring it. He also mentioned it would be a costly exercise. This shop carriers a high reputation and I know one of the guys personaly , my gut feeling is , if they cant fix it in a relatively cost effective manor , then it's not worth fixing !!! Shrapnel

Little bit of good news leading up to xmas , after having a couple wanted adds up on two "for sale " type sites for about 2 months , this week had 3 offers of Auto blocks. 1st is bare block with caps , 2nd is a 1300 block with crank , 3rd is engine and auto less diff and cylinder head. Should know more about all 3 early in the new year. New Zealand tends to all bar shut down from xmas eve through to 10 - 17th jan and as all 3 are well away from where we live, we'll have to wait tell the freight company's are all back on deck . But we have 3 good offers at reasonable costs (will probably buy all 3) so things are looking up for early next year. Shrapnel

Bit of an update. Over xmas break, I removed the 4 fiberglass flares as these were attached to body ok , BUT , the original wheel arches were still there and would rub the tires if we hit a bump ! so , bit of slow going , but I've lifted/re-radiused all standard wheel arches 23 - 25mm (which was quite a battle on the rear ones due to the inner guard) including turning out a lip as per original. I've Painted (black ) and re-fitted the LH side flares in the position they came from. I'm in the middle of painting the RH side ones at present, then they'll be fitted. Best part ?? All this body work/re-shaping , , , and No damage to paint except below the attachment point where you wont see because the flares cover it. I've sanded back and painted this area using a Galv/Zinc Primer and Top coat to keep the rust at bay. I fitted the flares using Stainless Steel Button Head Cap Screws and Nylocs instead of self tappers, so all's looking pretty sharp now Engine ?? Recieved the 1275 block and crank early last week. This is just going to sit under the bench for a month or so, then I'll take it to the reconditioners to be bored and ground to take pistons etc from broken motor. Meanwhile yesterday, we recieved the original 1000 motor that was removed from the car, according to the guy we got the car off, this is a good little standard engine but leaked lots of oil and the timing chain was pretty rattley , so we'll put a new gasket set through it and timing chain. This will get the car up and running while we rebuild/build-up the more hosepower version . Today we're off to Wellington (about 2 hours drive) to see friends, including a mate who use to specialise in automatics of all makes, he's going to pull the auto down and give it a flush-out and check things over while doing so. If he finds anything not right , he'll repair while there. So , , , Hopefully by the end of this month , , , we'll be driving again . Shrapnel

sounds like you've been busy. Glad to hear that you've got a couple of decent motors now and look forward to hear about the progress. Some piccies of the arches would be nice to see too.
