Hi and welcome to AMR.
This is not normal but is a common fault with auto gearboxes.
Sometimes gearboxes with this fault can go for thousands of miles but it will need to be sorted at some point.
Are your oil and filter changes up to date? Slips like this can be caused by using old and tired oil or by not having sufficient oil in the engine. Oil changes are recommended every 2-3,000 miles. There's advice on here about choosing the right oil and how to check the oil level (it's a bit different than on a manual car).
If the oil is OK then your gearbox will need some attention. There's some advice and topics on this forum if you want to do it yourself otherwise you'll need an auto box specialist to look at it.
hth, Paul

This "flaring" is common with cold oil, does your car do it hot and or cold? The early boxes were worse because the oil feed to the top/reverse clutch was restricted, later cars should be better. Heavy 'flaring" will wear the clutch, a sympathetic driver should be able to reduce the condition, Otto has always done it when cold but the 'box has now got 30000 miles on it since rebuild and otherwise its good.

You could try a oil and filter change and go from there. Also it you might get a better response if you introduce yourself in the introduction section first

Does this flare-up happen only when under acceration in Automatic mode ie selector in D. Do you get the same symptoms when under light load, and how about when you do a manual shift from 3rd to 4th, and say if your in top doing 40mph then kick down to 3rd and full throttle till the box changes up at around 55-60 mph ?

I'm also new here , but once I've read that sliping when changing from 3rd to 4th could be just the bands that need adjustment.

Following on from the points raised here. My 1996 Mayfair 1.3i also had this problem of flaring up when engaging 4th gear. The problem was worse under load, hard acceleration and when cold, but eventually became annoying as it happened all the time. I had the gearbox rebuilt at a specialist centre but it didn't really cure the problem.
Is it possible to completely resolve the flare up?

Yes, who ever did your rebuild didn't do the job correctly is it still under warranty ?
There are a few "secrets" that most so called specialists don't know about and if they did still wouldn't use them......
I get most of my automatic rebuilds from "automatic specialists" who have already rebuilt the unit only for it to come back as a failure......
We get referalls from most of the Mini specialists as well, this is mainly because it is a specialist transmission and not for the faint hearted.

Hi Martin,
The re-build was undertaken some years ago so wouldn't be covered by warranty now. I will PM you.
