It could just be the Industrial Designer in me, BUT, I am making my own Center Console for my Mini. The pre-manufactured ones with the up-sweeping front just looks too...bulky. My design is a simple flat shape with cup holder and coin catch. The problem is the little Shifter Wedge sticking out of the floor, same as the one at the top of the page and in most Auto Minis. The thing i have yet to see is how this is handled coming through the console. I have tried a boot type design but it just isn't "right". Would appreciate any info or tips on this, a photo would be even better. Thanks for your help. Ruben, 1983 Mini

Why not just keep the detent plate. Incorporate it into your console. Just be sure you make some accommodation for adjustment. Either that or be absolutely certain of your measurements in that region.

Not sure what the "detent" plate is. But, with the top of the shift mechanism being larger than the section coming through the console being tight around that is not really possible i think. I have thought of using a piece of brightwork and fit it snuggly around the shift mechanism. I think what I am hoping to find is some sort of boot to dress it up a bit.

Clever, very Clever. But wait......what is that on the toe? Have you stepped in something?

Hey, i am serious here.... I would like to see how others have treated this little Cheese Wedge sticking out of the floor. The Boot idea is good....but can't see the gear selector! So, all i am asking is that someone post a photo of how they treated the mechanism surround. The ideas i have tried to use are ..... well.....like the stuff on the toe of the Boot from Manny. Just a little help for a Newbie here. Love my Mini, what great fun in such a itty bitty car. Love the folks that own them as well, great attitudes and typically like to help other Mini Owners. Thanks for any help guys......I would help you if i could.....

The detent plate is the chrome plate screwed onto the top of the box. It has 'detents' in it to hold the shifter in gear.

came across this picture of a centre console, might help you a bit. Just seems to be a hole where the gear selector is though. Paul

Thanks for the Photo. As you can see, the little Wedge just sorta sticks up out of the console. This is what I am trying to resolve. Looks a bit unfinished to me really. I am considering a Boot of some sort to cover the hole and the wedge mechanism. Again, any ideas or solutions would be appreciated. Manuel's Boot has been the most creative, but it takes a lot to shift the gears.... Thanks to all for their input and help. Auto-On.

Is that the infamous Club anti-theft device I see? Where does one find those for our cars?

I want one of those locks too - anyone know where they are from?

I think it's one of these: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270821649685#ht_2545wt_1270It pushes over the handbrake then secures to the gear lever. In theory this prevents anyone from releasing the handbrake and/or changing gear. For an older auto Mini or similar it's worse than useless. If you unscrew the gear selector knob it just lifts of the selector shaft and then slides off the handbrake. On newer models where the gear selector knob is a bit more difficult to get off it might deter an opportunistic thief or slow him down a bit.

you could weld a collar on the gear shift, just below the gear knob,on a manual shift.

1983 mini Is it possible to post your console so we have a visual?
I have a feeling you might be able to make a simple dome over the shifter with clear acetate plastic. Open up a slot for the shift post and maybe even line the edges of the slot with that brush stuff you see on the new auto floor shifters. Then you just have to paint the inner side of the plastic with an opaque colour wherever you don't need to look thru for the position indicator. Cut some console sides for the curved plastic to fit in on each side and fasten it all on the main console top.
OR Just make some fancy sides in thick acetate that fit around the wedge. Like a wee box with a curved top.
