So I bought the Auto Mayfair (1986) and had it shipped to the USA (New Orleans) where she currently sits outside on the trailer. I noticed an oil patch underneath so decided to investigate. It was coming out from beneath some black rubber-based glob which was liberally coating a shaped metal plate under the transmission. On removing the glob, I see two bolts holding the tin part. The inside one was leaking oil. I left it to drain for 24 hrs and then removed the bolts, added a washer and then gasket maker, then replacing the nuts without overtightening. Another 24 hrs and the gasket maker is set so I check the oil level before topping off.
It says it's full. So I imagine that it's the torque converter that leaked, whilst the engine oil remained.
Is that plate known to leak oil? What is its purpose? (I have a Haynes on order).
Thanks for reading this far!

I'm trying to think which plate you're talking about - which side of the engine is it? If it's below the torque converter then you may be referring to the plate that covers the selector lever pivot and cable joint. That would be part number 93 on this diagram? I would imagine that it's the selector lever oil seal that's leaking. I think that's part number 105 on this diagram. Unfortunately you'll find the Haynes is as much use as a chocolate fireguard when it comes to the auto transmission. Several of us have PDF copies of Austin/Rover manuals which do have the full detail, I'll send you a PM.

Facing downwards. Number 93 looks like the tin plate thingy.. but the bolts that came out were only about 1" long. 105 is too long. The oil came out of the bolt hole, not round the edge, so I'd be loath to take the plate off if I don't have to.

HeyA Mole!
There's no worry in taking that cover off....it is simply a cover. Doing this would allow you to gain a better idea of where the leak originates
