Morning everyone,
I have a 1992 Sprite 1275 auto. Couple of weeks ago, I had a couple of moments where the engine over-revved (as tho in neutral) for a second then corrected itself.
I parked up a few minutes later for 10 minutes, and when I restarted the car, no gears would engage. The gear selector moves freely, but essentially the car appears to stay in neutral.
I have little mechanical knowledge & am generally being told the gearbox will need replacing (mainly because the labour cost of repairing it will be so high).
So, anyone any thoughts? Any guesses if there might be something simple wrong with it, and if not, any suggestions who could put a new gearbox in for me (not too expensively!)
Cheers all Mark

Nothing in any gears? Including reverse? Is the oil level correct? Whatever, it's almost certainly repairable, a new box will cost much more. I'd expect to budget about £800 though. Whereabouts are you? MRA Minis in Wellingborough are the acclaimed experts, or Surf Blue in Nottingham know what they're doing too.

Hi, certainly does not sound good, I presume the oil light stays off when the engine is running? I suppose the least expensive possiblity could be the selector cable has broken/become disconnected. Other than that sounds like an engine out job. If the autobox was working well before the sudden failure then it could be a relatively cheap and easy fix, if the 'box was on its last legs then it needs a full overhaul, which I imagine is what a "new" 'box means. Tend to agree with Jock. Usually something that sudden is caused by something quite prominently simple. i.e. cable or linkages. I can't believe that the entire thing would crap out!
Cable maladjustment's, stretching or loose/disconnected links can also cause a failure or "slip" to occur.
The manual shows how to check oil pressure to the gearbox. You suppose it possible something gave out in the pump area or a blockage somewhere preventing oil flow? Lo-o-o-ng shot!
