This may seem like a daft question, as I use my automatic Mini Mayfair everyday and therefore cover lots of miles. I am soon to drive from County Durham to Oxfordshire - a trip I have not made in a Mini since 1994 when attending Rovers Birthday event for the Mini! I wonder how many automatic owners regularly use their Minis for long distance motorway driving ? Touch wood, I've never had any overheating problems with my car and I've recently had a Maniflow LCB, and cat back Maniflow exhaust fitted together with a K & N filter. I'll probably renew the green stuff pads and will of course have the Mini serviced just before I go. I'm also thinking that to have certain spares on board like new fan belt, etc: may be a good idea. Any comments would be much appreciated. Roger Tony.

My advice would be just take it easy. Stop regularly and check oil/water etc, but I'm sure you know that anyway.... Lets hope the rain we've been having eases up.
I bought a mini a couple of months ago after not owning one for 20 years and when I came to drive it 200 miles home, it was pouring down. It doesnt have an engine shield so I made a cover for the distributor / coil out of a cut up supermarket bag for life. I don't know if its technically correct to do so, but I got home. Maybe I would have anyway, but I kept expecting to be stranded on the hard shoulder of the M6 in the rain. Anyway good luck with your drive.

Hi Jime, Many thanks for your advice. That sounds very reassuring hearing your 200 mile trip. I'm probably underestimating my car as I use it everyday in all weathers. Hope you are enjoying your Mini following your 20 year break! Cheers. Roger/Tony.

Further to my original post. The Mini has today gone to my local Mini Specialist to have a full service, tappet adjustment, - I'm going for 20/50 oil this time (as mentioned in my other thread in Oils), and general check over - ball joints etc: Am quite looking forward to the trip !

I'm delighted to report that my Mini drove with no problems whatsover to Oxfordshire and back to Durham. I treated the Mini to a trip to the Heritage Motor Museum - of course! as the Mini (and me) deserved it! I averaged a steady 65 on the Motoway - regularly checked the oil and water (it didn't use a drop!). Prolonged overtaking was the only time that a bit more power would have been nice - thus my other thread today in regard to fitting a stage 1, 2 or 3 Cylinder Head. My Mini is a 1996 model with now 49,000 on the clock. Great car, and so capable!
