Hi Wozza and welcome to the Register its better you have the right amount really but at a guess an automatic box with too little oil id say was worse that one with a little too much though i mean a little as its hard to get an exact oil level with any car its an aproximation really there is a certain way to check your Oil on an Auto and its as follows (taken from Rover Service Manual) Make sure you have enough oil in at all times though, check it reguarly and keep a little 1litre bottle for top ups Sorry cant be of more help though hopefully somebody else on here may be able to advise you further Huggz Jodie

Both are baaaaadd! You should aim to keep the level between the dipstick marks - I'm a fine one to talk as somebody gave me a 'helping hand' *harrumphs* and topped up my oil "'cos it was low- off the stick" and it's still overfull now I'm servicing her soon though, and she's currently immoble due to manky tyres Emma

Hey Emma did they top it up cuz it was low on the dipstick when cold? if i had a pound for everybody who thought their Auto was low because it read low when cold you are right though both are bad and we should allways make sure it has the right ammount As Baby Bear said Not Too Little Not Too Much Just right

Vanessa has been overfull about 6 weeks . Oil level was checked with the engine running - fine for a seperate engine/auto, but NOT in a Mini. It wasn't until she started leaking that I checked oil level...... I'm not best pleased shall we say. Fortunately the leaks are the diff/driveshaft seals. I'm hoping no other damage has been done Emma *edited for fat finger syndrome*

If the level drops too low you'll have trouble getting forward drive - I have experienced this.
