Hi and welcome to AMR.
In my opinion that price really is top dollar - even for a dealer. I would expect the price to be nearer £3,000.
It's not very original but does look like it's in tip top condition (given the poor quality pictures). If you go and view it look at the bodywork closely - a respray can hide a multitude of sins. Also check the engine and transmission over carefully. Any knocks, strange noises or slips in the transmission and walk (or run) away.
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks very much for that advice. I'm getting quite worried. I've heard that from quite a few people now, yet the dealer seems very confident that he'll get £4,000 for it. He's even said he's happy to put it in storage and watch it increase in value. I really like it (based on the pictures) but I don't want to get ripped off.
Under what circumstances would that be a reasonable price?

He may just be calling your bluff. Take what you think is fair cash and offer to buy. He might not be hurting to put it away since he does deal in Land Rovers $$$

Take a look at this one, it went for a bit of a bargain price, but you will get the idea: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181061119157I have a 1986 Mayfair Auto (11 months MOT and tax) that I reckon would fetch £1,500-£2,000 for a private sale. The insurance valuation is £2,000. The bodywork is not in as good condition as the one you're looking at but otherwise it's much the same in terms of (lack of) originality etc. If the bodywork were in excellent condition it would still only fetch £2,000-£2,500 as a private sale; hence £3,000 for a trade sale. If it were a fully original Mayfair then it would be worth more money (they are getting quite rare). This one has been modified quite a bit. Also (sad to say) if it was manual. hth

Buy on condition, you only get what you pay for. My 1988 Mayfair Auto cost me £995 on ebay in November. 45,000 miles runs like a dream but has a fair bit of rust and dents in the roof. It is a keeper though and I intend to spend time and money on sorting out the issues.
