OK then I have a 1991 mini city now the standered ignition coil is black with a red top but it has a sticker on it saying unit-part ignition coil or at least I think its standered now I am guessing its ballast but I have a Lucas dlb 105 coil in my house how do I know if its ballast or not if it will fit or if my cars even ballast and what does ballast mean whats the difference mini sport say the dlb 105 coil will fit up to 1996 but mini spares and somerford say up to 1985 hmm who do I believe I am so confused

Ryan. If you have a ballast, measure its resistance. I believe it is supposed to be 3 ohms. Now measure your coil. If it is also 3 ohms, you need a ballast. If it is higher, preferably 6 ohms, it doesn't need the ballast. You can use either coil but you have to use the proper hook-ups. ballast used in series with the coil or no ballast.

ok think ive figured this one out my 1979 mini clubbye estate (1098cc) has a silverish coil and that has to be non ballest on that age where as my1991 mini has a black coil with red top thought it was a sportyone to begin but there is remains of a sticker that says unipart (missing bit) and then allest ignition coil thought at first it could say non ballest but my ballest one is allot smaller in size than the dlb105 and the mini estate coil
