Is it possible to use pot CV joints on an early automatic gearbox which had hardy spicer joints in it originally or will I have to try and source hardy spicer ones.

You will need to find Hardy-Spicers as the diff flanges are different. In fact PLUNGE jointed cars/gearboxes don't actually have flanges, the pot joint slips directly on to the diff output shaft. Mini spares list them - search for QL5000 - and they very occasionally turn up on a well known rip off
auction site If you really want to use plunge joints, you will need to swap to a later gearbox (I would swap for one if you want ) but would this not subtract from the history of your car? Emma

Umm, not wanting to make waves, but if I may correct kalkat here, yes it will be possible to fit pot joints, but it's not quite straight forward. You'll need to remove the diff from the gearbox. nothing too tricky in that and swap the output shafts for some that take Pot Joints, ones from a manual gearbox will fit no problem. You'll also need to sway the diff side covers for late (post 74-ish) types, however, those that fit the auto gearboxes are unique to them so ones from a manual box won't fit.
The QL5000's were a replacement for the rubber universals, sorry to saym these are difference and not directly interchangable with the hardie spicer type universals.

Aaaargh ............ all very true Spider! I have no idea where my head was when I wrote that... my bad
The reason I suggested swapping the entire 'box is that would be a LOT easier than trying to cross match parts.
Many parts end up 'distressed' together, and from then on, only fit with each other. It is also probably cheaper to get an entire autobox rather then the parts to convert.
IIRC - the hardy-spicers use ordinary UJs so swapping for new shouldn't be too hard. Just needing to find the right size

I can be contacted on martin@kmprecisionengineering.com The "real" answer is NO ! The case and diff cover would need to be changed as the seals etc are different sizes, unlike a manual the side covers of an automatic only exists on one side.

I once was told that the shafts, seals and bushes are all different between the pot joint and Hardie Spicer differentials. the difference is very slight but enough to cause serious headaches. I have a friend that races minis and at one time I asked him about swapping to pots and he said I was crazy to do so. the Hardie Spicers last longer, are more forgiving, cheaper and are easier to swap out. I agree with Martin, No! Just something I was told. BTW He has been racing minis for a few decades now.
