Is it slipping out of gear Dan? Boris used to select the wrong gears prior to his rebuild and there were times that there was no drive at all dont think he changed down though at times he appeared to hold on to third when you stopped at lights Then he couldnt pull away Since his rebuild hes fabb! Hopefully somebody on here may be able to diagnose this for you? Come on guyz can anybody help dan?

its a bit of a weird 1, when the engine is cold and i go down hill or round a tight bend the gear kicks down(alot!) til i let off and after a couple of seconds it goes back to 4th, but with the oil level on max this rarely happens??? just keep it topped up i guess!?!? bit of a leak to, think its from the sump plug, is there anything better for sealing the plug than the metal sealing washer??

Ive heard there are more modern sump plug washers you can use now instead of the copper that also have a rubber sealing bit but not sure which? they were never made for minis though so i guess its a bit of experimenting really? Ive never had any probs with the copper ones though i allways inspect them when changing the oil and if needed replace them as they are only about 30pence each at shows if the problems never really happen with the oil level on full maybe thats what you need to do? Keep it on full Hope you get it sorted Huggz Jodie

The copper sump plug washers only really work when they're soft. Each time you use them, they 'work harden' so after a while you either need to replace the washer with a new one or anneal it to make it soft again.
If your gearbox is happy with oil at the full /max mark, keep it full. The operation of the AP 'box is reliant on a number of things - not least of all a comparatively constant oil flow. If your oilpump is slightly below parr or the conerter has seen better days, they can have an effect.
Odd gearchanges when cold aren't unusual, and care should be taken until the engine/oil/gearbox is warmed up.

If you get the oil light coming on and the unit "changing down" when cold and turning corners its a low oil level and in fact there is not enough oil pressure for the bands + clutches, the boxes seem to be quite sensitive to oil level in cold weather, in reality I think the return flow to the oil strainer is poor particularly when the oil is cold and holding up around the engine.

i heard that some race cars use a type of sponge that absorbs oil to stop it going to 1 side of sump which is common when going round corners
