Hello all, well I finished my lil egg rebuild quite a few years ago now (68 morris mini matic) and have clicked over about 15000kms since then. Now the top and reverse clutches are dying a slow death and the torque converter is getting very noisy. I can no longer reverse up our driveway as the clutches slip that bad. So I got onto a new engine/box from an 88 rover mini. Still a 998cc auto. At least I think it is. Engine number is 99HB82Pxxxxxxx. The fella I bought it from couldn't find the selector and cable however he assures me my original selector is the same. My 68 minimatic has RN1234D. Would this work on a late 80s set up or were they RN123D? Any help from the brains trust greatly appreciated

Hi, I think it should still work but you,ll probably find your (4) gear is (D) drive. And the lever won't move all way to (D) on selector. I have a spare selector for the later mini 998, where are you? All the best Terry.

Hi Terry, I thought as much. Thankyou for your advice, much appreciated. I am located in Melbourne, Australia. I could be wrong in assuming you are based in the UK? Cheers Josh

Hello All, I am needing some help from the brains trust. I have a 68 Minimatic that is running on its original engine box (barely running that is) and its very tired both engine and box. I bought a 998 auto (approx 85-88 model A+) that appears to be in very good nick visually. My minimatic currently runs a generator (still positive earth), hardy spicer joints and its 29D(?) distributor.
My question is what am I going to need to drop this A+ engine in? I am thinking; new driveshafts to suit the pot joint diff set up on the A+ box new distributor as the A series appears to be different, although not sure which one? and Will this still work with the generator and the positive earth or will I need to convert? maybe a new cable set up etc as what I can see from photos, mid 80s minis only have RN123D where my minimatic still has the RN1234D? Anything I have missed? Thanks in advance. Cheers

Make it yourself easy. Go by trial and error. I don't think it makes any difference when you just use the ignition you have at hand. When you block the D position of the selector with something (a block of wood), the manual will work well with the box you have at hand. You will have to alter the universal joints to what your new engine carries. So see to get the axles that fit. When you stick to the electrical outfit you have at hand, there will be no problems.
When I am wrong, be sure there will be some one to react.

I would have thought that all you needed to do is swap out the selector plates on top of the selector box and then adjust your cable accordingly. Of course you would have to have both the selector boxes like the one on the top of this page.

When I understand it right, there is this difference between a box with 1, 2, 3, 4 and D positions and the one with 1, 2, 3, D; that in D the box chooses the appropriate gear herself and when in 1, 2, 3 or 4 position the gear is 'arrested' in the chosen gear. When you have a box made for the 1, 2, 3, 4, D position manual and you use the 1, 2, 3, D selector, the gear is not in 'drive', so fixed in the 4th gear, and not changing down automatically to lower gears when speed is going down and the box should change gear to have enough engine revs left.

He will have to find a new selector plate with 1-2-3-D on it. I was once told that some A+ arrangements had P above the R. Can anyone out there clarify this? To use the old plate, he will have to do as you said. With the D blocked, the selector will be in D when 4 is selected. Niceboy, if you need to convert to -ve earth, do you know where to find the information? Here are some places neg-convert 1 Go to technical advice and then scroll down to electrical system. neg-convert 2 It's for MG but works fine. Mark

Thanks so much for the responses guys, Sorry for the late reply, have been offline for a while. Have only just started getting the bits and pieces sorted to carry out the transplant. Awaiting a new distributor to turn up and hoping all will go well. I cleaned the engine and block down ready for painting and I noticed that when I moved the selector arm at the actual gearbox, I can feel 7 different positions, so hoping that D is D on the actual selector. If its not, I can live with having to put it in 4 to get drive. Cheers
