I'm looking at converting a Manual to an auto but thinking of using a Metro/Rover auto setup, has anyone done this? and if so what are the likely difficulties?

First of all you must realize that you need a special front subframe, because because of the hight of the automatic box the aggregate sits deeper in the subframe to clear the air box from the lid of the engine room. The subframe is a bit wider and the front rail is more forward. I don't think you can use the Rover Metro subframe in the Mini. So you have to look for a separate Mini subframe and you have to find a separate RoverMetro engine and box. You have a better chance to find them together from a discarded Mini and you can be sure the one suites the other.

Hi, Slipping(!) a complete auto unit into a once manual car should be a reasonable job, just gear selector and cable possibly drive shafts, as mentioned the subframes are a little different but not insurmountable. Mounting a manual engine onto an autobox is something else. There are significant differences between an Auto block and a manual block, much easier to use a full auto unit. Jock

You WILL need an auto subframe.! As Wimfournier pointed out, the auto box is both wider and deeper. As a result of this, the subframe has to be a correspondingly accommodating shape. The lower side part of an auto subbie is some 10mm further outboard than on the manual version.
