Hi, seeking opinions on fuel additives. Was advised to use Millers VSP to avoid damage to fuel pump diaphragm due to ethanol in unleaded. Does anyone else bother with this? Also does anyone know if super unleaded is better for older engines (the VSP is also an octane booster)? Car is not running well and wondered if it was because I have put too much additive in as it is hard to measure out unless you have a 50 litre tank!!!

I've never bothered with additives, but since I switched to higher octane unleaded it runs much much smoother. I couldn't believe the difference

Cheers for that. Any particular brand?

When leaded fuel disappeared in Aus I did the fuel additive thing and worried about my valve seats, then I did a test with my Mini K(non auto) and ran it on the 91 octane with no additive and got to 20,000 miles with no problems which is impressive considering the reputation of the A series head. I had a head modified with seat inserts for Otto(68 minimatic) because my wife got so confused with the choice at the pumps unleaded, premium unleaded, lead replacment(available at the time) and its done 17,000 miles so far, can't remember the last time I had to adjust the tappets. I'm not sure an additive would protect the rubber bits sounds like wishful thinking, I try to avoid ethanol if possible but if its less than 10% the pumps don't need to be labled here. The manual on my PT cruiser forbids ethanol fuel mainly for the rubber bits I did runs some 10% ethanol fuel through it and the car went better. Never thought about running high octane fuel in Otto, it is running like a cut cat at the moment on normal 91 unleaded I'm not sure I could handle more power! Jock

Thanks Jock. I think the issues of running on unleaded are exaggerated somewhat by the manufacturers of the additives (for obvious reasons!) Am about to fill up with normal unleaded (95 RON) to see if that helps to return things to normal. Interestingly the original owners manual states 97 minimum (old 4 star) so will listen out for pinking and if this appears give super unleaded a try. Not too worried about valves as I have a fairly new unleaded head on mine. Will let you know how I get on.

My car runs better on the premium grades of petrol - I also use Castrol Valvemaster. There is little point worrying about ethanol in fuel, no matter what you add to it- it'll still be in there

Thanks, Just had a chat with Millers and they say that their VSP products protect against the damage ethanol can do to your fuel system. VSP `power plus` also adds 2 octane points so should help with pinking. Will give it a try & let you know how I get on!
