Many people with non-automatic Mini's build 'bigger' engines in their cars. I feel tempted too. So, looking around I stumbled on the E-series BMC engine that we find in Austin Maxi's and Austin Allegro's. Yes, even with the AP automatic box that we know of our beloved Mini's. Any one having any experience with using this unit in a Mini?

Hi, The picture you include is a manual gearbox, did Leyland ever build a E series engine with an AP box? I thought the AP box was kind of on its limits with the 1275 A series. The automatic 1800 used a Borg Warner 35 from memory. Jock

You are right, the 1800 (B-series) engine used a Borg Warner. But before BL created the Meastro, with its Volkswagen auto box, there were the Allegro and Maxi with a 'in the sump' auto box. At first the Allegro used the 1275 engine, but the car was quite too heavy for that engine with an auto box. So, they used the E-series engine, with an AP auto box from the Maxi as a substitute for the Allegro. And matter of fact is, that the first maxi's 1500 with auto box got a 1750 E-series engine after a while. Complaining customers got the heavier engines in their cars. AP III.pdf (20.54 KB)

Hi again, Wow thanks for sharing that, never heard of an auto Maxi, my father had two a 1500 and a 1750, both manuals with a horrible gearchange and build quality, the nadir of BL. sounds like AP3 boxes must be even more rare than AP2s. Any pictures? Jock

My Dad had a Maxi manual. He loved it, and I have fond memories of it. My Mum hated it, and said the steering was too heavy making it feel like she was driving a tank.

The AP3 is not all that much stronger than an AP2 but it is a lot bigger than an AP2, I would think trying to show horn one in to a Mini subframe would be challenging to say the least.

Thank you for responding Martin. Once I found a partslist from JPAT on the internet regarding the AP111, ment for the Maxi & Allegro 1500 / 1750. So, I was curious about the possibility of building such an aggregate in the Mini. I found some one who had dismanteled an Allegro and kept the aggregate. I planned to visit the man some time and bring an AP11 with me to compare. But I understand from what you wrote, it is quite 'bigger' than an AP11. (There goes my dream). I'll stick to my 1000. At the moment I'm opening up a AP11 gear box to learn how it works. It is marked: MCD 1920 and on the lid there is the number 28826. I'm told the aggregate is from an Innocentie 1971. I'm driving a 1978 Mini automatic and have no complaints yet. But would be prepared when time comes.
I'm happy that we have you 'in the picture' again. Relief!

Well, it may be bigger but I have seen maxi manual in a mini before.... and also V8 Rover 4 litres buick in a mini, on a transverse gearbox, so nothing is impossible..

Was the 1500 the same as the 1500 used in the Aussi 1100's? Or was that a 1275A dubbed as 1500? I heard that the E series engines were nothing but trouble and that an A+ would long outlast it. Would this hold true on the auto box?

Wikipedia tells us: The first use of the E-series was the front-wheel drive Austin Maxi five-door hatchback of 1969, and it also appeared in the Australian Morris 1500 saloon and Morris Nomad in the same year. These models were closely based on the ADO16 platform, but fitted with the 1.5 L E-series. The 1500 was a four-door saloon, the Nomad a five-door hatchback borrowing some of its looks from the Maxi.
That's why I thought about the possibility that this aggregate would probably fit in the Mini.

Thanks. That is right. The 1500 type E series was fit to the Morris 1500 and the Nomad(1100 platform), which I'd love to get hold of. Seems to me we have a Nomad among us here on this site. I'll check.
