As previously posted, I'm tearing into my transmission to find why it does not move the wheels, just spits oil out the filter. According to one of the manuals, that should be a problem with the tow valve, but all the valves appear to work properly. I did find a worn o-ring on the connection from the valve block to the oil tube in the cover plate, and will replace it. But going through it, I notice that the low pressure valve also has a seal of some kind like an o-ring, but it is plastic. Does that need to be a tight fit? The white round part here.

Hi, Pretty sure the early boxes did not have a seal on the shaft end just relied on the close fit of the cover and shaft, the low pressure valve maintains oil pressure in the Torque Converter (30 psi ?) any excess gets dumped into the gearbox shaft for lubrication of gears. Probably not the reason for your no-go unless there was no oil supply to the converter. Jock

That is correct earlier boxes did not have a seal, and depending on who and when it was made the design of the shaft end could be either plain are have a couple of narrow grooves..
The only thing missing this seal would give you is a delayed pick up off the line and then only on initial start, ie if you start then immediately try to drive you will find it revs up freely then it will suddenly lurch forward and that will only happen at start up as the converter will have drained back.
