Does anyone know the visual differences between the AP1 and AP2 gearboxes, and the year of change?
I have two complete boxes from 998's which are post 1985 which I believe to be AP2 but I'm not completely sure.
I've also just aquired a third box from a 1275 which has the inhibitor box at the base of the front cover, the others dont have this. This box is 1990 onwards.
Seems like an easy question to answer but I'm struggling to find it in my manuals or on-line.
I have heard all 1275's were fitted with AP2's?
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, not sure about AP1s must have been a very early box, 1968 Otto has AP2, but as you know there have been significant upgrades to AP2s through the years, would be useful to see a chronological list of the evolution of the AP auto box. Jock

Not all of us can open this link. Can you supply a different one or a website?

I cant open it either
I called JPAT today just to ask a few questions on the overhaul kit I'll need. It seems they are struggling to get clutch steels from their supplier as they've stopped manufacturing them. They're looking at trying to get them made up from stock, but said they may not be available for a good 2 - 3 months.
I think my steels will be ok as they're in good condition but thought I'd let everyone know.
We also chatted about AP1 and 2 versions. He said he's been working at JPAT for 20 years and could not recall any customer requesting AP1 service parts, and thought they were from the really early MK 1 minis.
I think it's fairly safe that we all mostly have AP2's. I'm confident my three boxes are anyway

Well, yes, I suppoost so. I understood from what I read that only the AP1 had an internal oil pump in the box that made it possible to start the engine by pulling the car. In the AP11 you won't find such a provision.

The AP 11 (early versions???)uses the governor gears as an aux oil pump to allow bump starting Jock

I can confirm that. In my '69, the 2nd gear position also bump starts the car.

Hey... it IS an automatic Lol yes it is :-) It is very simple too.... the road wheels drive the pump, ie the pump speed is directly related to road speed. and as you tow it along oil is pumped into the valve body which is set to 2nd position, then diverted to the fluid flywheel / converter and therefore once full turns the engine over and hopefully starts...
