How many gears does everyones Autos have ? Just wondering as some people have come up to me at shows saying the one in Merri (my woody) is wrong as it has a 4th gear Anyway Merri has .... Reverse, neutral, then 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and finally Drive. and Maggi (my Shorty) has ... Reverse, neutral, then 1st, 2nd, 3rd and finally Drive. (no park or anything on either I just use neutral for that). what does everyone else have ?

Well it's funny you should ask this question!!! I was debating this with my partner only the other day and he seems to think I only have 3 and drive BUT then I spoke to Jodie and she said that I have 4 but I have to admit when I get to about 50mph I do feel she needs another gear but Jodie said the same about Boris and her's is a 1275 so it's still a mystery to me but I'd like to hear from somebody with a definitive answer and then we will all know or maybe the gear ratios are not quite right

just rememberd that I have an AP Auto service Manual burried in one of the drawers ... Anyway it shows in there that the earlier ones did have a selectable 4th gear ... It did not mention anything about how many actual gear each type has so still unsure if the ones with only 3 gears listed only have 3 gears. Someone did tell me once that the Drive on the 3 gear type actually has a 4th though but dont know how true that is

Hi Holly all AP Automatic units are 4 speed regardless The only differences are the earliest ones had all 4 gears selectable meaning as your manual states you could if you wished hold the Vehicle in 4th so it wouldnt change down unless you selected either D or a lower gear yourself I think it was later deemed that such a provision was no longer necessary as if you shift from 3rd into drive it selects 4th anyhow The only other major change was when the APII was introduced when the included a Park Pawl "P" position on gear selector Then of course theres the different gear selectors that came with the various versions The Main one was of a die cast fan shape(like that in our Banner)with a seperate screwed on gear indicator plate that had the position numbers and letters stamped into it in relief. On early models it was polished with the characters picked out in black,on later models using the same selector they reversed this to black with the characters picked out in white Im not sure that the R-N-1-2-3-D ever appeared on the polished plate version but the R-N-1-2-3-4-D appeared on both colour variations The early versions had a little round gearknob kind of like an upturned rounded off top hat, which later changed to a "T" shaped top. Heres the gear selectors from the AP transmission in order of appearance first type second type third and final type up until APII was launched when the APII Transmission was launched it incorporated a "P" position a different large plastic casing and long large gearknob and the Gear position indicator was illuminated as shown below This whole assembly was lifted directly from the very last A series Metro Automatics before they got K series power Hope this helps explain things a little? Huggz Jodie

Wow! A nice definitive little article there And you're right in saying that all the AP transmissions are 4 speed simply with the omission of the lockable 4th on some - I believe it to be AP2b. For the real differences, you have to fossick around inside the 'box in all the oily bits Emma

fos·sick (fäs′ik)
intransitive verb
1. to prospect or search, as for gold 2. to search about; rummage
Etymology: Eng dial., prob. ult. < fuss
transitive verb to search for; seek out
No... it's a real word - see;)
