I'd be very grateful for some advice here. My 1996 Mini Mayfair automatic, has recently developed an oil leak. I'm not too sure where the oil is coming from but I wonder if anyone could advise on the most likely or commonplace areas in which leaks develop?

Hi Tony,
It'd help if you could let us know whether the leak is from the left side or right side of the engine. Usual areas can be around the oil filter housing / cover, diff - output oil seals, primary gear oil seal, rocker cover gasket, cylinder head gasket etc etc .......
To be honest it could be from virtually anywhere, and you'd be best giving the engine a good degreasing and pressure washing, then run the engine to trace the leak.
Please reply and we'll try to help you along the way, and if you could give us an idea of roughly where the drips are coming from under the car it'd really help. Perhaps post a few photos up.

Hi Stu,
Many thanks for your reply. From what I can see, the leak appears to be coming from the right hand side - in standing in front of the Mini, looking at the engine bay. I plan to clean the engine bay tomorrow, as to be honest the engine is rather dirty! I will update once I have had a good look tomorrow. Roger.

Tony, you must bear in mand that about 17% of the heat that the burning of the gas producer has to be dissipated from the skin of the engine and geer box. When these are clad in oil and grease then that heat has to get away via the radiator. So it comes that your engine is running too hot. Keep you engine and box dry.
